Anesthesiologist Educational Requirements

Generally speaking, in the US a high school and an undergraduate degree would be the starting point in the educational requirements for an anesthesiologist. After that, four years of medical school followed by three years of internship and a year of residency. Then, if one wanted to specialize further, he/she could do a fellowship for an additional year. While laws vary from state to state, in many states a medical school graduate can legally practice medicine without the benefit of an internship and residency.

After completing undergraduate work, generally in a scientific discipline like Biology or Chemistry, aspiring anesthesiologists must earn a Doctor of Medicine degree, followed by at least four years of training in an anesthesiology residency program and internship. As part of their studies, medical students will study critical care medicine, cardiology, internal medicine, surgery and pharmacology. Like all physicians, anesthesiologists must be board certified prior to entering medical practice

Basic educational requirement for entering into anesthesiology course is Bachelor of Science. There are some medical schools that require two-year undergraduate programs, as well. Anesthesiology graduation program in approved medical colleges generally requires a period of four years to be devoted. Degree offered is known as Doctor of Medicine [MD]. Then follow internship and residency programs.

Anesthesiology internship usually takes a period of one year to two years while requirement for residency anesthesiology program is four years. Finally, aspirants are required to appear at licensure exam. Successful completion of this examination earns aspiring candidates professional license.
